Explore Anaconda & Deer Lodge Montana
Located in Southwest Montana, just two hours outside of Bozeman and 30 minutes from Butte, the small towns of Anaconda and Deer Lodge offer visitors a little bit of history and lots of outdoor recreation.
Deer Lodge
Steeped in history, Deer Lodge once served as the division headquarters for a major railroad company and is home to one of the largest and most well known range ranches in the US.
Visitors can learn about the area’s significant cattle ranching history at the 1,500-acre Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site and how the open range cattle industry of the late 1800s influenced the more scientific ranching industry of modern times.
They were a rugged set of men, these pioneers, well qualified for their self-assumed task. In the pursuit of wealth a few succeeded and the majority failed,…the range cattle industry has seen its inception, zenith, and partial extinction all within a half-century. The changes of the past have been many; those of the future may be of even more revolutionary character. Conrad Kohrs, 1913
Formerly part of the Grant-Kohrs Ranch, the Rock Creek Cattle Company may be of interest to golf fans. The top ranked private golf club in Montana, and one of America’s Top 100 Golf Courses according to Golf Digest, is members only, but offers an 18 hole golf course and 28,000 acres of ranch land and outdoor adventures.
All are welcome to step back in time at the Old Montana Prison & Auto Museum or enjoy a movie or live event at the Rialto Theatre, built in the Beaux-Arts style in 1921 and located in the downtown business district of Deer Lodge.
Anaconda
Nearby Anaconda offers year-round entertainment and is popular in the summer months for hiking and fishing in the 158,000+ acre Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness area; deer and elk hunting in the fall; and for skiing at Discovery Ski Area in the winter.
Lost Creek State Park, home to mountain goats and bighorn sheep, offers dramatic views of 1,200 foot high gray limestone and pink and white granite formations. Visitors can also head to the northwest corner of the park to see water drop more than 50 feet over Lost Creek Falls, one of the most popular destinations in the area.
Another popular stop for locals and visitors alike is Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Enjoy soaking in one of the two Olympic-sized pools (one indoor, one outdoor) and two mineral soaking pools. Kids will love the hot spring water slide and adults can relax on the golf course or at the spa. The Fairmont Hot Springs Resort also offers on site accommodations and both casual and fine dining restaurants.
Don’t miss Georgetown Lake, only 30 minutes from Anaconda. This alpine lake is known for its blue ribbon fishery – and with mountain views and abundant wildlife – it’s also a perfect spot for boating and camping. Discovery Ski Area in Philipsburg covers over 2,000 acres and its three faces offer runs for every level of skier in the winter, plus mountain biking terrain in the summer. Other Anaconda area attractions include the nationally recognized Old Works Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus and a charming main street with plenty of shops and restaurants and a brewery.
