Get To Know Taite and Trent Johnson

Western Ranch Brokers' newest team members, Taite and Trent Johnson talk about their boots on the ground knowledge and how it translates to ranch brokerage, their journey to WRB, and speak on the status of today's market.

Get To Know Taite and Trent Johnson

For the Johnson brothers, ranching isn’t just an occupation — it’s a legacy. Sixth-generation ranchers, Taite, Trent, plus their younger brother grew up east of Gillette, Wyoming, on a family place that balanced cattle, community, and hard work. Their dad split his time between the ranch and the coal mines, while their mom, a counselor, kept both family and cattle grounded. Growing up, their days were jam-packed with school, sports, rodeo, and plenty of chores, instilling a work ethic that’s carried into everything they do today.

Rodeo was part of their DNA growing up, with team roping and calf roping taking center stage. Trent laughs, looking back at his short-lived attempt at saddle bronc riding: “I had a guy tell me, if you want to know what sport you should be doing, look at how many 80-year-old bronc riders there are versus 80-year-old team ropers. That stuck with me — I figured I’d better play the long game.” That same mindset — pursuing passion while thinking long-term — shows up in their careers now, too.

After college at Montana State University, the brothers set out to build more than just a ranching operation. They wanted a profession that blended flexibility, independence, and financial stability while still keeping them tied to the land. “We always knew we wanted to be in ranch brokerage at some point,” Taite explained.

“Appraisals were our starting point, giving us the fundamentals and discipline we rely on today to guide clients through ranch transactions with confidence.”

Life On the Ranch & In Real Estate

For the Johnson brothers, balancing ranch work and real estate has become second nature. Most mornings begin in the shop that doubles as their office — a hub where they connect before heading in different directions. Some days it’s cattle, some days it’s real estate, and often it’s both — a rhythm that reflects their work ethic and versatility. Working together as brothers has become one of their greatest strengths.

“We’ve been side by side our whole lives,” Trent said. “Some days one of us takes the lead, other days another does. And when one of us is focused elsewhere, the others step in to keep things moving. That kind of support is hard to match on your own.”

Together, the brothers bring a balanced approach — blending sharp analytical insight with strong client relationships — ensuring every detail is handled with care.

Why Western Ranch Brokers

For Taite and Trent, choosing a brokerage wasn’t about making the biggest splash — it was about finding the right fit. Reputation mattered most. “For us, it’s the people and the brand you’ve built,” Trent said. “Our reputation is important, and when you align with a company, it says a lot about who you are. People look at the team behind that brand and know you’re putting your name alongside theirs.”

That alignment with Western Ranch Brokers felt natural.

“WRB has built a brand and a team that represent the ranch brokerage world with authenticity and excellence,” Trent said. “That was important to us, because it reflects the same standards we strive for.”

The philosophy behind their own company, West Range Ventures, echoed what they saw in WRB. “The three things we were aiming for in our appraisal brand were authenticity, fluency, and expertise,” Taite explained. “Being in the trenches with clients, speaking the language of the industry, and delivering high-level service throughout the process. When we thought about what we’d want to build on the brokerage side, we realized — it was already here. That’s Western Ranch Brokers.”

In short, the partnership was about joining forces with a team that shared their values, matched their vision, and had the track record to back it up.

“Western Ranch Brokers aligns with how we believe the business should be run, marketed, and represented to the world,” Trent said. “The branding, the style, and the people made all the difference for us.”

Building For The Future

The Johnson brothers are proud of what many once doubted — building a thriving business together while growing their families and ranch. “People told us it wouldn’t work, that you can’t stay in business with family,” Trent recalled. “But together, we’ve built something stronger than any one of us could have on our own. That’s what I’m most proud of.”

Looking ahead, they see their role with Western Ranch Brokers as an exciting new chapter. “The last five years were about checking boxes — getting licensed, certified, and building the foundation,” Taite said.

“Now it feels like we get to spend our time doing the work we love — meeting people, working deals, learning, and getting better.”

At the same time, their company West Range Ventures is expanding into a model that integrates real estate, production agriculture, and investment services under one roof. “Our slogan is integrated ag and real estate service solutions,” Taite explained. “Whether it’s cattle, finance, or outfitting, we want to provide clients with everything they need — and if we can’t do it in-house, we know the people who can.”

Authentic, Professional, and Rooted in the Land

At the end of the day, the Johnson brothers’ story is about staying true to their roots while embracing new opportunities. They don’t approach clients as salesmen — they approach them as ranchers who understand both the financial stakes and the emotional weight of buying or selling land.

“I don’t think any of us want ‘realtor’ on our gravestone,” Taite said with a grin. “But this business has given us the chance to meet people, see new operations, and help families through important transitions. And that’s something we take seriously.”

For families considering selling, their advice is straightforward: “Markets are at all-time highs,” Trent said.

“If you’re going to sell, there’s never been a better time. And if you’re going to make that kind of decision, you want a team that understands the weight of it and executes at the highest level. That’s what Western Ranch Brokers is all about.”

The Johnson brothers are proof that legacy and innovation can go hand in hand. Grounded in tradition but driven by growth, they’re building a future that honors where they came from while expanding what’s possible in ranch real estate. Western Ranch Brokers is proud to have them on the team and looks forward to their continued success across every avenue of the business.
